Orthodontic treatment for adults

At Fillman Orthodontics, we tell all our adult patients the same thing – you’re never too old to get the smile you’ve always wanted.

Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age and our adult patients appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile. In fact, one in every five patients we treat here at Fillman Orthodontics is over the age of 21. This certainly helps debunking the myth that braces are just for teenagers!

Discreet treatment options

These days, there are many discreet treatment options for our adult patients so you don’t have to worry about what you’ll look like if you do have treatment. Here at Fillman Orthodontics, our two most discreet treatment options are: clear ceramic braces and Invisalign aligners.

Jaw surgery

One thing adult patients may wish to note is that jaw surgery is more often required for adult orthodontic patients because their jaws are no longer growing. This isn’t the case for all adults, and we can let you know at your free consultation whether you may require jaw surgery or not.

Other implications of adult orthodontic treatment are if you have experienced some breakdown or loss of teeth or damaged the bone that supports the teeth. Bone loss can limit the amount and direction of tooth movement. If you have experienced this, you may require periodontal treatment before, during, and/or after orthodontic treatment. We work closely with professional periodontists for patients who need this.

Life with braces

A common question we get asked by our adult patients is how much having orthodontic treatment impacts on their lifestyle. Our reply is: only as much as you let it!

If you are wearing fixed metal or clear ceramic braces, there will be some foods you need to avoid, and others you will need to take care eating, as listed below. If you’ve been fitted with Invisalign aligners, you can eat what you want because you can remove the aligners for eating, brushing and flossing.

Foods to avoid with braces

Foods to avoid with braces:

  • ● Chewy foods — bagels, licorice
  • ● Crunchy foods — popcorn, chips, ice
  • ● Sticky foods — caramel candies, chewing gum
  • ● Hard foods — nuts, hard candies
  • ● Foods that require biting into — corn on the cob, apples, carrots

Foods you CAN eat with braces:

  • ● Dairy — soft cheese, pudding, milk-based drinks
  • ● Breads — soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins without nuts
  • ● Grains — pasta, soft cooked rice
  • ● Meats/poultry — soft cooked chicken, meatballs, lunch meats
  • ● Seafood — tuna, salmon, crab cakes
  • ● Vegetables — mashed potatoes, steamed spinach, beans
  • ● Fruits — applesauce, bananas, fruit juice
  • ● Treats — ice cream without nuts, milkshakes, Jell-O, soft cake

Having orthodontic treatment doesn’t stop you from playing sport either. Just be sure to wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and your appliance.
