About orthodontics

Welcome to the world of orthodontics! You’ve no doubt come across us because you’ve decided it’s time to straighten your teeth and achieve that beautiful smile once and for all, or your dentist has recommended you get orthodontic treatment.

Either way, orthodontics will probably be very new to you, so here’s a bit of an explanation about what an orthodontist is, how orthodontic treatment works, and who is responsible for your treatment.

Orthodontics and orthodontists

Orthodontics (also referred to as dentofacial orthopedics) is a specialized form of dentistry focusing on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities. An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has studied for a further two to three years and is experienced in straightening teeth, correcting misaligned jaw structure, and improving the function of your smile.

Orthodontists vs dentists

You may be wondering what the difference is between an orthodontist and a dentist. An orthodontist started their career as a dentist, but has chosen to pursue further treatment in the specialist field of orthodontics. They no longer fix cavities or undertake regular dental check-ups. That’s what you need to see your family dentist for.

During orthodontic treatment, we work closely with your dentist and will encourage you to attend your regular check-ups to ensure your teeth stay as healthy as possible throughout treatment.

How orthodontic treatment works

The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to move your teeth so orthodontic appliances are used to apply gentle pressure to your teeth to guide them into a straighter position.

Orthodontic appliances can be made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. They may be fixed to your teeth (as is the case with the brackets used in braces) or removable (like the aligners used in Invisalign treatment).

Once upon a time, orthodontics was associated with a mouth full of metal but orthodontic technology has experienced some exciting developments and gone are the days of ‘train tracks'. Today, you can choose between fixed braces, clear braces and invisible braces (which aren’t braces at all but clear aligners). And if you’re wearing braces, you can even choose the color of the elastic bands that hold the wire in place.

Treatment times

One of the most common questions we get asked here at Fillman Orthodontics is, ‘how long will my treatment take?’ We understand you can’t wait to see the results of orthodontic treatment and your beautifully straight smile, but we tell our patients that good things come to those who wait.

Everybody’s treatment time is different for several reasons:

  • Not everybody needs the same extent of orthodontic treatment. It will depend on the severity of your problem.
  • We each respond to treatment differently as our mouth and face grows at different rates.
  • Some appliances work faster than others.
  • How diligent you are with following our instructions when wearing your appliance.

As a guide, treatment time typically ranges from one to two years, though there is some treatment for minor cases that can achieve results in as little as six months.
